The Hilda Jayewardenaramaya Buddhist Monastery and meditation centre is established to preserve the Theravada Buddhist teaching in the Western world.
The provision of facilities for ordained monks to practice the noble teaching, disseminate the Buddhist teaching among lay people (i.e. morality (Sila),
concentration (Samadhi), wisdom (Panna)), and teaching noble qualities such as tolerance, hospitality, compassion, and loving kindness are our objectives.

It is with great pleasure that we inform you that the Temple Building Project, which was initiated several years ago, has now reached an important and successful milestone.
We are pleased to announce that all major arrangements for the construction of the New Hilda Jayewardenaramaya Buddhist Monastery are now in place.

Temporary Relocation of the Resident Monks: The work is scheduled to commence on September 1, 2026. During the construction period, our resident monks—Ven. Jinananda Thero, Ven. Suneetha Thero, Ven. Sumanarathana Thero, and Ven. Sumanasiri Thero—will be temporarily relocated to 1873 Fairbank Avenue, Ottawa, between August 25 and August 31, 2026. The temporary residence is a single-storey bungalow located in a residential area, with limited space for conducting religious activities. On September 1, 2026, the existing temple building will be handed over to the construction company.
Regular Dhamma Activities: We have made arrangements with the Masonic Centre at 2140 Walkley Road, Ottawa, to conduct most of our regular Dhamma activities during the construction period. These activities will include: Monthly Poya Sil Programme, Sunday Dhamma School for children, January 1st Blessing Programme, Sinhala and Tamil New Year Blessing Programme, Wesak Celebrations, Katina Celebrations.
Temple Building Project
The City of Ottawa approved the building permit to renovate the existing building of Hilda Jayewardenaramaya Buddhist Monastery. Constructions needs to be started in June 2022.
