Hilda Jayewardenaramaya Buddhist Monastery (HJBM) is situated in a prime location in Ottawa, in the National Capital Region of Canada.

Since opening the doors at the Hilda Jayewardenaramaya in 1998, we have been using the building located at 1481 Heron Road as our temple in Ottawa. The current facility is inadequate to accommodate the growing number of devotees of Sri Lankan origin as well as Canadians at large.

An extension to this building is not possible as it cannot conform to the latest building code requirements and the available land too is inadequate. Therefore, we have no other option but build a new facility.

Need for Expansion of Facilities

  • The total area of the existing building including the basement is only 2600 square feet.
  • The Monks are housed in cramped quarters which are inadequate.
  • Existing electrical and plumbing services and the deteriorating condition of the building leads to potential health and safety hazards.
  • The existing Shrine room is inadequate to accommodate the growing demand for meditation and other spiritual activities.
  • Monk’s quarters, kitchen and space for Dhamma School are a dire need.
  • On special occasions such as New Year, Wesak, Katina Ceremony, etc., when the full congregation participates, the existing area is insufficient and the need for larger accommodation has become an urgent and significant requirement.
  • Expanding community services.
  • The present premises does not have wheel chair accessibility.
