In 1 000 A.D. world population was estimated to be 310 million. By 1950 population had grown 800 per cent to reach 2.5 billion. Just 59 years later in 2009 population had reached 6.7 billion. It is now just over 7 billion and if current reproduction rates continue by 2150 world population will be 694 billion! How does Buddhism explain these figures? If they represent repeated rebirths of individuals we're not making much headway toward Nibbana are we.
First of all thanks a lot for the information related to population growth in the world. It is really interesting to see how and with what conditions the number of humans grows rapidly. According to Buddhist point of view the figures you reported are not sufficient to prove the repeated birth of humans in the same world. because there is a great possibility for anybody to reborn in other realms according to their karmic energy. also other living beings in animal kingdom ghost hell and divine worlds may disappear from their existing forms and reborn as humans. due to this reason the growth of human population increases rapidly. In addition there are many instances in the Tripitaka the recorded teachings of the Buddha that uncountable number of beings cycle in the Sansara being unable to understand the reality of life. the special section called Anamathagga sanyuttha in collected discourses the Buddha says the beginning of Sansara and the end of it is indiscernible. so it is very difficult for someone to decide that the same humans die and reborn in the same world. To support to this point Vimanavaththu (stories of divine beings) and Pethavaththu ( stories of beings in the hell) elaborate stories of how and with what they have gaining pleasure in divine world and the suffering in the hell. These types of revelation about invisible places of beings assure that the population increases not because of the inability to attain Nibbana but in one sense the skillfulness (Kusala) of beings. the other reason may be the uncontrolled rates of birth in some nations. If we consider these figures with the Paticcasamuppada(the dependent co-origination) there are many causes to grow the human population. what we need to know is there is no clue that humans don't attain Nibbana so the population is going high. Remember that number of living beings in this planet is uncountable.

Do not be angry to protect me
Monks, if others speak in disparagement of me, of the Dhamma or of the Sangha, you should not be angry, resentful or upset on that account. If you were to be angry or displeased at such disparagement, that would only be a hindrance to you.
If others disparage me, the Dhamma or the Sangha, then you must explain what is incorrect as being incorrect", saying: ‘That is incorrect, that is false, that is not our way, that is not found among us.’
Monks, if others speak in praise of me, of the Dhamma or of the Sangha, you should not on that account be pleased, happy or elated. If you were to be pleased, happy or elated at such praise, that would only be a hindrance to you." If others praise me, the Dhamma or the Sangha, you should acknowledge the truth of what is true, saying: ‘That is correct, that is right, that is our way, that is found among us’.
